How Can We Make Recycling Part of Our Lives?

An environmentally conscious outlook is sweeping the world. As sustainability influences every aspect of life and encourages more thoughtful consumption, recycling is becoming an increasingly important consideration. Here, we explore ways to make it part of our lives and the care we owe our planet.

We have responsibilities towards the planet we inhabit. In recent years, conscious consumption, sustainability and environmental awareness have become shared priorities across the world, carrying equal importance in different sectors. Globally, we are becoming more aware and better organised.Reducing plastic use and removing products containing chemicals from our lives wherever possible have already become part of this outlook. To take individual steps towards sustainable living, we are exploring the details across a wide range of areas, from fashion and interiors to cosmetics, food and drink.

The Importance of Giving Materials a New Life

Recycling is, of course, one of these concepts. We are looking for ways to develop more conscious consumption habits, prioritising materials that can be used again and supporting their transformation into something new rather than waiting for them to break down in nature.Rather than treating all waste as rubbish and turning away, we value its potential to be reused as part of a move towards zero waste. There is much to say about recycling's positive effects and why this practice matters so much.

What Does Recycling Mean?

Recycling, a concept we often encounter through statistics, means helping to prevent the depletion of natural resources through excessive use, living as cleanly as possible on our planet and avoiding contributions to the climate crisis.Every missed opportunity to recycle means misusing and damaging our planet's natural resources. To live sustainably, we need to learn how to recycle as much of our waste as possible or make choices that result in recyclable waste.

An Environmental Perspective: Recycling

As we consider and care for our planet's future, we also need global awareness. International Recycling Day, celebrated every year on 17 May, draws attention to this awareness and aims to make it more familiar. Some of the most striking statistics are:

  • Recycling 1 tonne of newspaper can save more than 26,000 litres of water.

  • Recycling aluminium cans saves 95% of the energy needed to produce a new aluminium can.

  • Recycling 1 tonne of steel can save 10.9 million BTU of energy.

  • Recycling 1 tonne of plastic can save 5,774 kilowatts of energy.

  • Throwing away products instead of sending them for recycling wastes energy equivalent to the annual output of 15 power plants.

How Can We Recycle as Individuals?

  1. Turning glass, plastic and metal into new products through recycling sounds positive, does it not? The first step is to separate waste. Establishing a routine of sorting household waste and taking it to local recycling centres is particularly important.

  2. By working with local public organisations, you can deliver your sorted waste or arrange collection from your address. Remember, recycling is a key to a more conscious, sustainable life.

  3. Alongside glass, plastic and metal, used oils can also be very harmful to the environment. You can hand them over to municipalities or companies affiliated with the Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation, or arrange regular collection from your address.

  4. To establish this routine, choose bins with separate compartments. Even a small space set aside at home can become a thoughtful contribution to the planet. If you have to use other types of packaging, make sure you choose packs labelled as recyclable.

  5. Another important habit is to avoid plastic-coated products and reduce their use. For example, choose insulated flasks and reusable bottles instead of disposable plastic bottles and paper cups, while managing your personal hygiene more carefully. You can also choose cloth bags instead of plastic ones, and glass or metal containers instead of plastic boxes.

  6. Make sure the waste you separate for recycling is as clean as possible. For example, remove food residue from a plastic container before sending it for recycling.
